The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and Health Scholars Partner to Improve Operating Room Fire Response with Virtual Reality Simulation

Westminster, Colorado, January 7, 2021. Health Scholars, the company recognized for voice-directed critical healthcare VR simulations including advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) and Pediatric Assessment Training™, is announcing a partnership with the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) to provide Health Scholars’ Fire in the OR™ Virtual Reality Simulation product to surgical facilities.

Surgical fires are rare, but serious events. And while the frequency of operating rooms fires has decreased over the last 10 years due to increased focus on fire safety, including naming October as Fire Safety Month, fires are still an ever-present risk.

Health Scholars’ virtual reality training places the provider in the OR facing simulated fires that must be effectively and efficiently extinguished. “It’s been demonstrated that VR training provides a 250% improvement in managing an operating room fire when learners practiced in VR versus traditional reading or lecture. Fire in the OR™ helps organizations train in a more advanced manner. And it allows for greater access to training in non-group settings, which is imperative during these times where we continue to social distance,” says Cole Sandau, CEO of Health Scholars.

“Our mission is to support patient and healthcare worker safety and VR simulations have proved to be a highly effective learning modality,” said AORN’s Executive Director/CEO Linda Groah, MSN, RN, CNOR, NEA-BC, FAAN. “We don’t want the surgical team members learning how to contain a fire in a real-life scenario; we see this partnership with Health Scholars as an opportunity to create a safer operating room and patient care experience.”

Fire in The OR™ is now available for purchase from AORN. For more information visit https://www.aorn.org/fireintheOR
